Before we delve into the skin benefits of niacinamide, let’s clarify what niacinamide is. Also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinamide, this water-soluble vitamin is found in foods and health supplements. In recent years, it has gained recognition in the skincare realm for its remarkable properties.

So, what are the benefits of using skincare products that contain niacinamide?

1. They may help support smoother skin 

Niacinamide may help soothe irritated skin and support a smoother complexion. Studies have found that 2.5% niacinamide, in particular, resulted in a smoother skin surface and may increase keratin, a protein that plays a role in skin cell formation.

2. They my help maintain a healthy skin barrier

Your skin’s barrier is your first line of defence against external aggressors. Niacinamide in skincare products may help strengthen this barrier, keeping your skin well-protected. Niacinamide stimulates ceramides which are fatty molecules that help maintain a healthy skin barrier. In addition, studies have found that niacinamide may also speed up keratinocyte differentiation, which is critical for a strong skin barrier.

“Protecting the integrity of the skin barrier is one of the most important ways you can ensure the health of your skin is maintained,” shares Gabbie. “Niacinamide may contribute to skin barrier function, and so it may help to nourish your skin.”

3. They may improve the overall appearance of your skin

Niacinamide doesn’t stop there. It is a versatile ingredient that may benefit a wide range of skin types. Niacinamide has been associated with addressing various skincare concerns, such as reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, redness and yellowing. It may even enhance skin elasticity. 

“As with most ingredients and treatments, ongoing research is always needed to uncover the benefits or misnomers of a substance,” says Gabbie. “From the current research, niacinamide has some promising research behind it for its antioxidant and skin hydrating effects.”

Niacinamide in skincare: what products are available? 

You’ll find niacinamide in an array of skincare products, including serums, moisturisers, masks and even cleansers. You may find it paired with other ingredients, such as vitamin C, while it's also present in a range of products, including black seed oil. To incorporate it into your routine, simply look for products containing niacinamide and apply them as directed. Remember, consistency is key to reaping the rewards.

Are there any potential side effects when using niacinamide in skincare? 

Niacin (vitamin B3) has two potential forms that can be used in skincare: niacinamide and nicotinic acid. Nicotinic acid, when taken internally, can sometimes lead to skin flushing, an unpleasant but harmless sensation that most people don’t like.

On the other hand, niacinamide has fewer side effects when applied to the skin. As a result, more research has been done to understand its effects in skincare products.

“As with all skincare ingredients, niacinamide may not suit all skin types,” shares Gabbie. “It’s important to follow the directions for use and do a skin patch test prior to use.”
