The world of health supplements is vast. For anyone searching for ways to stay strong and healthy, knowing which ones genuinely deliver on their promises can be difficult. Amid this sea of choices, methylsulfonylmethane – or MSM as it’s better known – is emerging as a supplement gaining recognition for its potential health benefits. And the science is there to back it up.
In this article, we answer the question on everyone’s lips: what is MSM? We’ll also explore how it may support your health and share scientific studies alongside expert insights from Registered Pharmacist, Soumya Pandya.
First, let’s demystify MSM. This naturally occurring sulphur compound has become a popular dietary supplement thanks to its potential health benefits. Soumya shares that “MSM appears to be safe and well-tolerated by most people, but as with all health supplements, it’s important to speak to a health professional to see if it’s the right thing for you.”
Let’s take a closer look at what MSM is good for:
MSM supplements may help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and improve skin firmness
The effectiveness of MSM can vary from person to person and may depend on what condition you are taking it for. While some people may experience relief within a few weeks, it could take longer for others. As Soumya shares, “Generally, it can be anywhere from 3-16 weeks to start noticing any changes.”
Studies have found that for mild osteoarthritis, it can take up to 12 weeks to start noticing improvements, while those taking it for muscle recovery post extensive exercise may see improvements after 3 weeks. For those taking it to preserve healthy skin, it can take up to 16 weeks, and for people dealing with allergy symptoms, it can be around 4 weeks.

As we have explored, MSM supplements may offer particular benefits for those seeking a non-medicated anti-inflammatory remedy to help with inflammatory conditions, allergies, or skin issues. Athletes and fitness enthusiasts looking to enhance their recovery may also find MSM supplementation beneficial.
As Soumya shares, “People should check with their healthcare professional before taking any medicine, especially pregnant women, young children and adults already taking other medications.”
The answer is yes and no. Taking MSM on its own has been found to reduce inflammation in conditions such as mild osteoarthritis. However, studies into using MSM alongside glucosamine and chondroitin to reduce inflammation have also been encouraging.
But Soumya adds this:
“When it comes to the use of MSM in other health conditions, there have been no studies or cases where taking MSM with another supplement is more effective. In these cases, MSM on its own appears sufficient.”
We always advise seeking guidance from your healthcare professional about taking any combination of supplements.
MSM supplements may help alleviate allergy symptoms
There appear to be some significant benefits in taking MSM supplements, whether it’s for inflammation and pain or allergy symptoms. If you’re unsure whether taking MSM supplements is the right choice, consult your healthcare professional.
