Support for every need: Choosing the right incontinence products
Incontinence is a common issue that affects millions of Australians, yet it can often feel isolating and challenging to manage. At Healthylife, we understand the importance of finding reliable products to support your incontinence needs, ensuring you can lead a comfortable and confident life.
What is incontinence?
Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control, a condition that affects more than five million Australians. There are several types of incontinence, and the symptoms can range from mild, occasional leaks to complete loss of control. Depending on the cause and type, it can be a temporary or chronic obstacle requiring ongoing management. People with incontinence may feel embarrassed or isolated at times, but it’s important to remember that you aren’t alone.
What are the causes of incontinence?
One or more underlying issues can cause incontinence. Despite what you may have heard, age is not the sole factor. Although incontinence is more common in women as they age, one in 20 adults experience discomfort with bowel and bladder control.
Children, too, are also affected – one in five will wet the bed at some stage. Weak pelvic floor muscles are a frequent cause, and changes to the nerves controlling the bladder or bowel may also lead to loss of control.
Several risk factors also include pregnancy, diabetes, obesity, constipation and urinary tract infections.
What are the symptoms of incontinence?
The symptoms of bladder incontinence are wide and varied, depending on the type and extent of the issue. Some individuals may experience leakage or loss of control while exercising, coughing, sneezing or laughing. Other symptoms can include frequent urination, poor urine flow, an urgent need to urinate, bedwetting, straining to empty the bladder and waking up multiple times through the night to use the toilet. Bowel incontinence symptoms range from an inability to control motions and wind movements to staining underwear.
Can incontinence be cured or reversed?
The good news is that help is available, and various management options may help to improve quality of life. Talk to your healthcare professional about options, which may include retraining and management programs, medication, diet changes and adequate fluid intake. There are also options that may offer immediate relief, such as incontinence pads and underwear, and barrier creams, all designed to help manage symptoms effectively and discreetly.
