What are BCAAs?
Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are a group of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. They are termed ‘branched-chain’ due to their chemical structure, which includes a branch off the main trunk of the molecule. These amino acids are essential because the human body cannot synthesise them, and they must be obtained through the diet.
BCAAs are important for muscle repair and energy during physical activities, and for maintaining overall body protein balance.
They are unique among amino acids because they are primarily metabolised in skeletal muscle rather than in the liver. This supports quick energy provision during physical exertion, making them valuable during endurance and strength training exercises.
Beyond their role in muscle health, BCAAs may have broader physiological effects. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) may influence brain function by affecting the production of certain neurotransmitters, which may, in turn, impact mood and cognitive functions such as mental focus. The primary mechanism involves their interaction with the production and function of serotonin, a key brain chemical for regulating mood.
Additionally, BCAAs support immune health. Their role in supporting the immune system is significant because they are involved in protein synthesis and energy production, which are important for the proper functioning of immune cells.
How do BCAA supplements support health?
BCAA supplements provide the three amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine in concentrated form, often as powders, capsules or gummies. Athletes, bodybuilders, and fitness enthusiasts may use BCAA supplements to support muscle recovery, reduce muscle soreness, and support exercise performance and endurance.
Additionally, BCAA supplements may help prevent muscle breakdown during prolonged exercise or periods of calorie restriction. They may be consumed before, during, or after workouts to maximise the benefits for muscle growth and recovery.
