What is a burn?
A burn is damage to body tissue caused by heat, excessive sun exposure, chemicals or electricity. Scalds are a specific type of burn caused by hot water or steam. Burns can vary in severity, from minor injuries to emergencies. They can affect different layers of the skin leading to symptoms such as pain, redness, blisters and sometimes nerve damage.
Treating burns involves removing the source of the burn and cooling the affected area with cool running water. Treatment for burns may also require support from a healthcare professional.
What are the different degrees of burns?
Burns are categorised by their depth and severity. Superficial burns, also known as first-degree burns, affect only the outer layer of the skin or epidermis. They cause redness, minor swelling, and pain but typically heal within 7–10 days with minimal risk of scarring.
Partial-thickness burns, or second-degree burns, extend into both the outer and inner layers of the skin, or dermis. These burns present with redness, blistering and significant pain. Healing usually takes 3–6 weeks and may result in scarring if deeper layers are affected.
Full-thickness burns, or third-degree burns, destroy all layers of the skin, including the epidermis and dermis, and can extend into underlying tissues. These burns often appear white, charred, or leathery. They usually require surgery.
How do you know what degree of burn you have?
It’s best to seek advice from a healthcare professional to determine what degree of burn you have.
When do you seek treatment for burns?
If the burn is deep, covers an area larger than a 20-cent piece, or affects critical areas like the face, hands, feet or genitals, treatment by a healthcare professional is important. Burns caused by chemicals or electricity also require professional care due to potential complications. Additionally, consult a healthcare professional for large or blistered burns, especially if blisters burst or if signs of infection appear.
