What are warts?

Warts are small, harmless lumps on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They typically match the colour of the surrounding skin and have a rough texture. While common in school-aged children, warts can appear at any age. They can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or indirectly via contaminated surfaces. Most warts will eventually disappear on their own, but treatments such as salicylic acid or cryotherapy (freezing) may accelerate their removal.

What causes warts?

Warts are caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV), of which there are more than 100 types. These viruses infect the top layer of the skin, leading to the formation of warts. Warts are commonly found on the hands, feet, and face but can also develop in the genital and anal areas. The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person or surface. Though warts are usually harmless and often go away on their own, they can be bothersome, and sometimes painful, especially when located on the feet.

What are the different types of warts?

Common warts (verruca vulgaris) are hard, raised lumps with rough surfaces, often found on knees and hands. Flat warts (verruca plana) appear as smooth, flattened lumps, typically on the face, lower legs, and hands. Filiform warts are thin, long threads, usually near the eyelids and lips. Mosaic warts are tightly clustered groups, often on the hands and soles of the feet. Plantar warts are small, hard bumps with black dots located on the feet. Genital warts, transmitted sexually, are grey or off-white lumps with a cauliflower-like texture, affecting the genital and anal areas.

How do wart treatment products work?

Wart treatment products target the virus that causes warts, human papillomavirus (HPV). Two common treatments are salicylic acid and cryotherapy. Salicylic acid is applied topically, gradually peeling away the infected skin over several weeks, enhancing the immune system’s ability to fight the virus.

Cryotherapy involves freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen, destroying the infected tissue. Both methods have shown effectiveness, though results may vary.

The effectiveness of wart therapy depends on factors like wart location, duration, and individual immune response.

While wart medicine may offer support during wart removal, it’s always best to consult your healthcare professional for advice.
