Natural remedies come in many forms and offer a range of potential health benefits.
One that’s gained attention recently due to its therapeutic properties is the black seed, also known as Nigella seed.
We spoke with Naturopath, Ebony Nash who shared her insights. “Black seeds have a long history of being used as a culinary herb – often used as a spice to add scent and flavour to dishes. But in recent times, much more research has been conducted on its extensive health benefits.”
In this article, we explore how to use black seeds for immune system support and take a closer look at the potential health benefits of this natural remedy.
Black seeds are known to have several therapeutic properties:
These properties may have an effect on the nervous system, metabolic health, cardiovascular system, chronic pain, gut health, immunity and fertility.
Combine black seed oil with honey for best results
Black seeds have long been used to help with ailments like fever, coughs, chest congestion, and bronchitis. Studies show that black seeds may help support your immune system by making certain immune cells more active and by supporting cells that fight off infections. Ebony adds that they may also be helpful in managing certain allergies like hay fever.
“The main active compound in black seeds is thymoquinone,” says Ebony. “It is most concentrated in the oil extracted from the seeds, making it the preferred method of consumption.
“You can take it directly or combine it with honey,” she says.
Here’s how you can use it at home in two simple steps:
Ebony emphasises the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional before commencing any new supplements to ensure they are appropriate for your needs.
She adds, “Ensure you use high-quality, pure black seed oil from a reputable source. The quality of the product significantly impacts the benefits you’ll experience.”
Black seeds may affect how certain medications work when taken together, as they may slow down the way the body processes some medications, potentially making them less effective.
It’s a good idea to speak to your healthcare professional if you are taking any medications and have any questions or concerns about their interaction with black seed oil.
Black seed may help soothe coughs, fevers and chest infections
Whether it’s beetroot powder, mushroom powder or, as we’ve now seen, black seed oil, Mother Nature provides us with some amazing ways to support our health.
“The research on black seed and its health benefits is expanding,” shares Ebony. “There’s a strong interest in natural remedies, and black seed is meeting the demand for evidence-based alternatives.”
We always recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet or supplement routine.
